What actually happens after you finish your draft
Most first time authors reach the end of a draft and discover the map stops there. Here is the route we take with a manuscript, in order.
First, a readiness review. We read the whole thing and tell you where the book stands. Then developmental editing, which is where structure changes: chapters move, threads get resolved, and the promise of the opening finally matches the ending.
Line editing and copy editing follow, tightening sentences and enforcing consistency. Proofreading is the final pass, after layout, catching what only shows up in a typeset page.
Design runs alongside all of it. Interior formatting, cover, and the small decisions that make a book feel considered in a reader's hands. Distribution and the sales rollout come last, and they work best when planned before publication day rather than after it.
None of this is mysterious. It is simply work done in the right order by people who have done it before.
